Barbara Pihos Bio
Barbara Pihos lives in Hampshire, Illinois and has been a professional artist for over eighteen years. Her work is in numerous corporate and governmental collections including Kemper Group, Chicago Botanic Garden, Transcontinental Pipeline, and the Nature Conservancy.
Regarding her etchings, she states:
"While many people initially think they are photographs, I create etching plates using only traditional techniques. They are line and aquatint in a series of ten steps, each consisting of either a drawing or painting and a timed submersion in a tray of acid. Before the ten steps, I search the forests, lands and shores of our continent's northern regions for a location that elevates my spirit. From sketches, memory and a lifetime of nature observation, I draw with a needle on a zinc plate coated with an acid-resistant ground and paint with an acid-resistant shellac on an aquatint ground. Two drawings appear as heavy lines and light lines. Eight paintings appear as tonal areas, from white to many grays to black."
