Peter Van Berkel's favorite painting subjects have been determined by his love of the French landscape. He has traveled to many places in France, and many other southern European countries, always with his easel or sketchbook in hand. His wife and two children accompanied him on his travels through Provence and Normandy. He also worked in Etretat, following in the footsteps of the French impressionists. His canvases evoke in his spectators a sense of recognition. The French landscape in all its aspects is what inspires him, and always will. Very conspicuous are the ever present flowers in his work, fields of lavender, poppies and sunflowers.
